Hack a Loom
Customising a traditional method of production with new technology to influence the fabric it creates.
Weaving reeds usually consist of wires set at regular intervals to keep warp threads spaced correctly as the material is woven. The reed and beater of an Ashford 16-shaft loom were remodelled to accommodate a laser-cut fan reed.
During weaving the reed is moved up and down, gradually shifting the warp threads from a spaced position to a compressed position and back again. The resulting material shows these undulating effects along the grain of the fabric.
